Step 1 in your Spiritual Health

I’m going to keep this one quick today. There are many ways to grow spiritually. If you do a quick google search you'll find countless tips and tricks posts and websites. They will give you some things to do like“find your passion and pursue it” or “put the past behind you and forgive”. While these are important steps in the process and they will need to happen for you to grow spiritually and become a spiritually healthy person, you wont be able to find those things without understanding the first steps, mindful living and awareness.

I want to be very clear before I continue. There is no end goal when it comes to spirituality. It is a life long journey and contrary to some belief systems should not be filled with pain and struggle.

So today I’m going to help you with the first and most important step in your spiritual growth and health: Becoming aware.

What is being aware or mindful living?

We all have a routine to our lives. Get up, go to the bathroom, take a shower, eat breakfast, brush your teeth, etc. We get so caught up in these routines that we forget we are alive. We forget we live in the most enlightening time in human history. We get so caught up in our routines that we miss the eagle flying over our car on the highway. Or the butterfly that landed on the bush we planted 2 years ago in the yard because we are rushing to an appointment. We miss these wonderful things because we are simply not in the moment. Not aware of the present.

It's easy to see those things when we are relaxed and had a good day, but being able to appreciate those things at our lowest of lows is truly what mindful living is about.

Being adults we need to plan for the future and have some foresight, but that doesn't have to come at the expense of the now.

I want you to try this, Right Now!

Take some deep breathes, try to see or hear anything your brain was drowning out while reading. Can you hear the buzzing of your light (electricity is so amazing by the way), maybe you can see a squirrel out of your window (I wonder what it’s been up to all day?). Whatever you witness, smile about it because you are alive and able to experience this beauty in the world RIGHT NOW! No matter what happened today you can be happy in this moment. For the next 2 weeks I want you to set your alarm clock to a time in the day you normally have to yourself. It can be your morning coffee, or the drive home from work. Whenever you have about 15 or so min. When the alarm goes off, I want you to stop whatever it is you’re doing and just observe what is going on around you. Breathe deep and smile because you are alive.

Once you start to notice these things on your own without the need for your alarm you can move on to the next steps, but until you are capable of being in the moment spiritual growth will allude you.
